Breast Lift: With or Without Implants?

Should you get a breast lift with or without implants?

For patients considering a breast lift at our Calgary plastic surgery practice, the decision of whether to add implants to the procedure can be tricky. Our team of Royal College-certified plastic surgeons has years of experience performing lifts with or without augmentation to help women feel more youthful, feminine, and confident.

Breast lifts are designed to address sagging or loss of perkiness in the breasts. On their own, they don’t increase volume, they simply lift and reshape drooping breasts. With implants, the procedure adds fullness to the uplifted breasts. Choosing whether to add implants ultimately comes down to your aesthetic goals.

In this blog post, we’ll review a few considerations to keep in mind as you weigh your options.

What Is a Breast Lift?

A breast lift procedure lifts and reshapes the breasts and often repositions the areolas to restore a youthful appearance. It is most commonly performed to help women experiencing sagging due to pregnancy, significant weight changes, or the effects of gravity over time. The surgery does not alter the volume of the breasts, but rather reshapes them through removing and reshaping breast skin.

Adding Implants

If a lack of volume is a concern, breast augmentation can be incorporated into a breast lift procedure. This is a very common combination, and is also helpful for correcting asymmetry. The customizable nature of implants makes their role in a lift procedure a highly flexible one.

The adjustable characteristics of breast implants include:

  • Size: An ideal implant size will help balance your body’s proportions. If you aren’t sure, we can provide recommendations during your consultation.
  • Implant material: You can choose between cohesive silicone gel, also called “gummy bear” implants, or saline, which is a silicone shell filled with salt water.
  • Shape: Implants be round or anatomically (teardrop) shaped (not offered at our practice). Round implants tend to provide more volume in the upper breast. The right choice for you depends entirely on your aesthetic goals.

Your initial consultation is an ideal time to discuss each of these options with your surgeon.

Your Recovery

Closely following your surgeon’s post-op instructions is the best way to have an uneventful recovery, whether you choose to add augmentation or not. You will likely experience swelling following your surgery, and we may use surgical drains to minimize this for up to 3 days. Most patients are able to return to many daily activities within 2 weeks, but it may take up to a month for swelling and discomfort to subside. Over the course of several months, incision lines will fade until they are much less noticeable.
