Can I Get a Mommy Makeover If I’m Not at My Goal Weight?

Should you be at your ideal weight before a mommy makeover?

Celebrities on social media posting post-pregnancy photos showcasing trim and fit bodies can create the impression that all new moms should be able to quickly “bounce back” after having a baby. Few women, though, have access to the personal trainers and nutritionists who help stars look so good. For many women, it can be extremely difficult to drop the weight gained while pregnant.

That, in turn, leads women who are considering a Mommy Makeover at our Calgary practice to ask if they need to reach their goal weight before undergoing surgery. Even though other practices may say patients can be within 15 or 20 pounds of their goal weight, our Royal College-certified plastic surgeons want patients to be at their ideal weight when they come in for a Mommy Makeover consultation.

It’s also important that the patient’s body mass index (BMI) meets the surgeons’ recommendation. Safety is our priority, and patients should be in good overall health for elective surgery. This requirement also helps ensure patients are satisfied with the results because weight fluctuations can compromise the outcomes. Losing significant weight following a Mommy Makeover could change the appearance of the areas targeted during the procedure, including the midsection and breasts.

Timing of Mommy Makeover

Reaching your goal weight is one of the milestones that you should meet before scheduling a consultation. Even though a Mommy Makeover is designed to help you get back your pre-pregnancy body, it shouldn’t be considered a weight-loss procedure. Our surgeons believe Mommy Makeovers should be thought of as the finishing touch after patients lose their pregnancy weight.

We also recommend that patients wait at least 6 months after stopping breastfeeding before scheduling a Mommy Makeover. Hormone levels continue fluctuating for months after breastfeeding, and a woman’s breasts may change shape or size during that time, as well.

What’s Involved in a Mommy Makeover?

The combination of procedures typically performed in a Mommy Makeover includes cosmetic breast surgery (either a breast lift, breast augmentation, or a lift with breast implants), liposuction, and tummy tuck at our Calgary practice. A tummy tuck removes the excess abdominal skin that remains after losing weight. It can also repair and tighten abdominal muscles that sometimes become separated during pregnancy. Cosmetic breast surgery is often included in a Mommy Makeover because many women also want to restore the shape and volume of their breasts, which can sag and deflate after having children.

These aren’t the only procedures that can be part of a Mommy Makeover, though. Our surgeons discuss all of your options during the consultation.

Mommy Makeover as Motivation

Being motivated to lose weight—and avoid regaining it—is a hurdle for many women after having children. Some of our patients use the prospect of scheduling the procedure as a way to help them lose weight and the desire to maintain their results as motivation for maintaining a healthy lifestyle after the surgery. Seeing the truly transformative results of Mommy Makeover surgery can also be an excellent motivation.
