Our plastic surgeons have seen cosmetic trends come and go over the years, but the popularity of breast augmentation never ebbs. Women from Edmonton to Saskatoon travel to our practice for breast enhancement surgery, just as they’ve done since we first established Macleod Trail Plastic Surgery.
New generations of breast implants and advances in surgical techniques make breast augmentation results more attractive than ever, with an increased emphasis on a natural look and feel. The days of patients wanting overly large implants seem to be gone for good, and cohesive silicone gel implants are a far cry from saline implants of the past that could feel like water balloons. All of this adds up to a surge in the popularity of breast augmentation, not only at our Calgary practice, but throughout Canada and the U.S.
Increased Implant Options
More than 8 out of every 10 breast augmentation patients in Canada and the U.S. choose silicone breast implants. Saline options can still be the right option for some patients, but the newer generation of silicone gel implants are preferred by most women. Breakthrough technology used to make breast implants have led to innovations such as “gummy bear” implants that more closely resemble the shape of natural breasts.
Additionally, highly cohesive silicone gel used in implants holds its shape even if the exterior shell cracks, so the gel doesn’t leak into the surrounding tissue. Round, silicone gel implants feel more like natural breasts than their saline counterparts and can create fuller breasts with more cleavage than anatomically shaped implants.
Limiting the invasiveness of elective surgeries of all types is 1 of the main goals of plastic surgeons and that’s true of breast augmentation procedures. Incisions can be made in the armpit area or on the lower edge of the areola, but the most common location is at the base of the breast where it connects to the torso (inframammary incision). Our surgeons believe the optimal breast augmentation procedure involves the inframammary incision and a dual-plane, submuscular placement using cohesive silicone gel implants.
In some cases our surgeons may suggest using the patient’s own fat to sculpt the final breast contours to ensure beautiful and symmetrical results. Fat transfer breast augmentation is becoming more popular as a “natural” alternative to breast implants but is limited to patients who want only a modest size increase.
These techniques, along with the use of devices such as the Keller Funnel®, minimize scarring and reduce the risk of complications following breast augmentation surgery.
Most women considering breast augmentation these days are looking for subtle enhancements that boost their confidence without looking disproportionate to their bodies. This trend has increased the popularity of breast augmentation and puts a premium on choosing qualified, Royal College-certified plastic surgeons who understand aesthetics and how to customize the results based on the patient’s goals and body.
