Nonsurgical Options to Eyelid Surgery: Do They Work?

Woman wondering about non-surgical options for eyelid lifting.

Our plastic surgeons are advocates for their patients. They’re committed to recommending the least invasive treatment solution that addresses an individual’s aesthetic concerns as effectively and enduringly as possible. When they consult with patients who are considering eyelid surgery at our Calgary practice, for example, they may suggest a nonsurgical option if they believe that alternative can produce the desired results.

Many patients, both at our practice and throughout Canada, ask about less-invasive procedures for all types of cosmetic issues. The RealSelf website includes a forum for patients to ask board-certified specialists for advice, and questions about less-invasive treatments are among the most common.

Several of these questions relate to nonsurgical options to blepharoplasty (also called eyelid surgery) for both the upper and lower eyelids. In this blog post, we’ll explain available options and emphasize that a personal consultation is the only way to know what treatment is best for you.

Nonsurgical Treatments for Droopy Upper Eyelids

BOTOX® injections can improve the contours of the upper eyelid and brow. Treatments should address both of these areas because they are interrelated, and neuromodulators that minimize wrinkles can produce a slight brow lift, too. Dermal fillers such as JUVÉDERM® can also play a role in creating a more youthful-looking eyebrow arch.

In some cases, upper eyelid surgery may be the best choice to create a more alert and younger appearance. We may also recommend combining surgery with a nonsurgical option, although any filler treatments would take place a few weeks before or after surgery to ensure it doesn’t interfere with surgery or the healing process.

Addressing Concerns About Lower Eyelids

Patients concerned about dark circles or lax skin under the eyes often need lower blepharoplasty. But some conditions can be addressed without surgery. For example, chemical peels can correct skin discoloration below the eyes.

Facials and medical-grade skincare products—including products from our ZO Medical and SkinMedica lines—can help the area under the eyes appear more youthful and rejuvenated. Our skincare specialist can recommend the best skincare regimen for you.

Lower eyelid surgery is necessary for conditions such as dark circles or bulges, which are caused by fat pads in the lower eyelid that gradually fall forward. Our surgeons may remove and reposition fat to retain the volume that creates a youthful appearance.

Eyelid surgery is popular because it can create a fairly dramatic change to your appearance while still being subtle. You can see for yourself in our gallery of before-and-after photos featuring some of our actual eyelid surgery patients.
