More men than ever before are coming to our plastic surgery practice in Calgary for cosmetic treatments. Social media, business meetings via Skype, and a natural desire to look more youthful has fueled an increase in the number of men undergoing aesthetic treatments that help them look more vital and attractive. Our specialists, including our Royal College-certified plastic surgeons, understand that men have cosmetic goals that differ from women and they tailor our nonsurgical and surgical procedures to address those unique concerns.
In most cases, men want less invasive treatments that require little or no downtime and create subtle results. Nonsurgical treatments, such as injectables, are ideal options. In addition to facial rejuvenation, nonsurgical body contouring for men can reduce bulges that resists exercise and diet.
These are the most popular nonsurgical treatments for men:
Men getting BOTOX injections range in age from their early 30s to their 50s. Many of our patients say they didn't think they would ever be in a plastic surgeon's office but have seen the difference injectables such as BOTOX made in the appearance of colleagues and friends. BOTOX works by relaxing the muscles that move when you change expressions, such as squinting, frowning, or looking surprised. Men and women, however, have different goals when they get BOTOX. Women want smooth skin and often get BOTOX to minimize forehead wrinkles and the vertical lines often called "worry line" between the eyes. Guys are more interested in softening crow's feet at the corners of the eyes, but don't want to erase all wrinkles.
Injectable fillers, such as the JUVÉDERM® product line, restore volume to aging faces. Men with under-eye hollows or sunken cheeks can benefit from filler injections. Our certified nurse injector uses fillers differently for men than for women because they have different cosmetic goals. The faces of men and women do not age the same way. Over-filling areas such as the cheekbones or lips can cause a "puffy" appearance and feminize facial features. Subtle enhancements, however, can create a more youthful appearance without looking unnatural.
Men who work out regularly and are generally fit often have isolated areas of fat that they just can't get rid of. It may be in the abdomen, love handles, chest, or the back. These men don't want liposuction, but they do want toned abs, or a masculine chest. CoolSculpting is an option. The nonsurgical procedure minimizes localized fat pockets using cold temperatures. It's also important to know that CoolSculpting isn't a weight-loss treatment. An ideal CoolSculpting patient is already at the weight they want to maintain, or within a few pounds of their target.
Sometimes men who come to our practice seeking aesthetic improvements need surgery. For example, eyelid surgery is very effective for men whose upper eyelids sag and make them look much older than they actually are. It's a relatively uncomplicated procedure that produces dramatic results.
