Injectables & Fillers

Non-surgical cosmetic treatments have become incredibly popular – particularly injectables such as JUVÉDERM® and BOTOX COSMETIC®. In Calgary, we use JUVÉDERM products, BOTOX, and fat transfer for women and men who want to smooth lines and wrinkles and add youthful volume to counteract the effects of facial aging. When administered by our expert injectors, these products produce remarkable results, allowing patients to look naturally younger without surgery, or in some cases, enhancing the results of surgical procedures.

Are Injectable Treatments Right for You?

Some women and men are bothered by forehead wrinkles, crow's feet, and nasolabial folds which can appear well before middle age. Injectables can reduce the early signs of facial aging, and are an excellent option for individuals who are concerned that wrinkles and lines make them look older, tired, or worried even when they feel refreshed.

Soft tissue fillers and wrinkle-reducing neuromodulators minimize those signs of aging without the expense and downtime required for more invasive procedures.

Your Treatment Options

Determining optimal treatment choices begins at your consultation with a thorough assessment of your skin and facial structure. Your surgeon will create a custom treatment plan designed to achieve your desired results. A combination of fillers and BOTOX – sometimes called a Soft Lift™ – is popular with Calgary patients seeking comprehensive facial rejuvenation.

Soft Tissue Fillers

We can treat a range of concerns with the various JUVÉDERM fillers, each formulated for use in specific areas of the face. All JUVÉDERM fillers are approved by the FDA and Health Canada, and are made using synthetic versions of hyaluronic acid (HA), a substance that is found naturally in the body. HA fillers are well-tolerated, require no allergy testing, and are pre-mixed with lidocaine – a local anesthetic that increases your comfort during treatment. When injected, fillers restore volume and reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The fillers available at Macleod Trail Plastic Surgery include:

  • JUVÉDERM® ULTRA™ and ULTRA PLUS™ XC: A smooth gel that we use to help minimize wrinkles around the mouth and nose area.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLUMA® XC: VOLUMA is the first filler approved by the FDA specifically to restore volume in the cheeks. The thicker gel is injected more deeply than other fillers and is clinically shown to achieve results that can last up to 2 years, although actual experiences may vary.1
  • JUVÉDERM VOLBELLA®: Lip enhancement is one of the most popular procedures at our Calgary practice. VOLBELLA is specially formulated to create full lips that still retain their natural contours.
  • JUVÉDERM VOLIFT®: Nasolabial folds, often called smile lines, develop as skin becomes thin, loses its elasticity and begins sagging. VOLIFT restores volume to the area and creates a lifted appearance to smooth smile lines.

Choosing the appropriate filler for the specific area of concern is the key to achieving excellent results.

Fat Transfer

Autologous fat transfer – taking your own fat from one area of the body and injecting it in another area – is an increasingly popular facial rejuvenation option. Fat is removed using liposuction, and then purified before it is re-injected.

BOTOX is the most popular cosmetic injectable in the world. Unlike fillers, BOTOX is a purified protein that works by relaxing the small facial muscles whose contraction causes frown lines, crow's feet, and forehead lines. When administered by a skilled injector, BOTOX minimizes these wrinkles and lines. While experiences vary, treated areas typically begin appearing smoother within a week of treatment and remain that way up to 4 months.

Submental fullness, a condition commonly known as a double chin, can affect men and women alike, regardless of age or level of physical fitness. For some patients, liposuction can help reduce unwanted fat beneath the chin, but BELKYRA is an effective choice for patients who may wish to avoid surgery.

Its active ingredient, deoxycholic acid, already exists within our bodies as an aid to digestion, dissolving fat in the foods we eat. When administered to unwanted fat beneath the chin, BELKYRA works in a similar way, breaking down fat cells gradually to create an attractive profile. BELKYRA often requires several treatments to be fully effective; its results can be long lasting.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I expect from a treatment session?

A treatment session with us will last about an hour. We will begin by preparing your treatment areas and marking the places were injections will produce the best results. If you choose to have a topical anesthetic, we will also apply that before proceeding.

The injections themselves will take about 20 minutes to perform. Once complete, we ask that you sit for a few minutes, and then you are free to go.

When is surgery a better option?

With neuromodulators (e.g., BOTOX) and dermal fillers, you can smooth out wrinkles on various parts of the face and add volume. Results of a single treatment may last for several months, but injectables are temporary and they don't remove excess, sagging skin. For example, drooping skin above or beneath the eyes cannot be treated effectively with injectables. Although neuromodulators can slightly elevate the brows, they cannot truly lift a heavy, sagging brow. Additionally, if a patient wants a long-lasting increase in volume, such as the cheeks or chin, facial implants can be the best form of enhancement. Your surgeon will be happy to go over all of your options, both surgical and nonsurgical.

Can I combine injectables and fillers in a single treatment?

Yes, it's possible to have a combination of injectables and fillers. Many of our patients have BOTOX COSMETIC and a dermal filler during the same treatment session, or choose to combine dermal fillers with BELKYRA™.

How much will a treatment session cost?

The price of a treatment session will vary from patient to patient based on several factors, including the injectable(s) or filler(s) used and the number of vials injected. We aim to be transparent on the cost of a treatment session, and we will be sure to give you a detailed price quote during your initial consultation.

Can I use injectables or fillers for areas other than the face?

Yes. Some products have indications beyond the face. RADIESSE, for example, can be used to add volume to a patient's hands. BOTOX has other indications, too. If you are considering injectables or fillers for areas other than your face, please be sure to mention it when you request a consultation with us, because it will change the conversation a bit.
